The School’s NY state licensed admission agents would be happy to meet you in a no-pressure atmosphere and go over the entire process with you... and answer all your questions. They can tell you if you qualify, or if you could qualify, and discuss with you why you want to enter this profession, which after all is usually a lifetime career decision. It is important that your expectations be realistic.

The school’s agent can familiarize you with the various courses offered and the benefits of each. They will explain the course lengths (number of hours and weeks) and the costs involved. If you wish, our financial aid officer will do a preliminary, non-binding, evaluation of your possible eligibility for financial aid.... and..... again at your option, they can initiate an “on-line” inquiry to determine whether the Department of Education would in fact make funds available for you. All of this would be done at no cost or obligation to you.

No cost for counseling, no cost for evaluation or processing, and no obligation to accept any grant money offered to you (if any)..... or to enroll in school at all.

Make the call. Meet with an Admission Agent. Come in for your Free Tour. To be sure we have time available to see you, please phone first: (212) 290-2289

Admission Basic Requirements

Close up of smiling children on a sunny day Our Admissions Office will be happy to help with any questions you may have regarding Admission Requirements. The following is a brief overview but is not complete and there are often extenuating circumstances... so feel welcome to speak with an Admission Counselor or the Director, if your situation suggests it.

Age: ABI admits students who will be 17 or older by the start of courses.
Education: Usually the State Department of Education requires that students be either High School graduates or in possession of a GED (General Equivalency Diploma). This requirement was established in a good-faith attempt to insure that the prospective student would be able to benefit from the training.
Ability to benefit test (ATB)

It should be obvious that there may be many individuals, who for one reason or another did not complete formal education or might have difficulty in obtaining a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)... such as language problems.

The Department of Education recognizes the importance of occupational (or vocational) education and has no desire to make it unavailable to such persons, providing there is good reason to believe that the individual would benefit from such an educational opportunity. Therefore, there are provisions for an “Ability to Benefit Test” which the State and Federal Education Departments have both approved for the purpose of determining which candidates appear able to benefit.

American Barber Institute is proud to make such testing available to applicants.

The director may grant an exception upon satisfactory written evidence such as a letter from a doctor.

Discontinuance

Students may discontinuance (resign) for a variety of reasons (i.e. extended illness, family problems, etc.). Students who discontinue for personal reasons must formally notify the school in writing. Pursuant to section 5002 of the education law, the Failure of a student to notify the director in writing of the withdrawal may cause a delay in the issuing of a Tuition refund, in the event any is due.

Termination by the School

Students may be terminated by the school for poor Attendance, failure to make satisfactory progress in their work or breach of school rules and regulations. In compliance with the Drug-Free Schools Act Amendments of 1989, ABI has adopted and implemented a program to prevent the unlawful possession, use and-or distribution, of illicit drugs or alcohol by students, as a part of the schools many activities.

Readmittance

It’s the school's policy to assist students in any Way possible to enable them to complete their course to qualify for hairdressing, cosmetology or nail technician's license. Students who withdraw or are dismissed may be reinstated at the sole discretion of the director. Dismissed students may apply to reenter. A student dismissed for excess absence, who is subsequently readmitted, must pay make up charges up to his or her actual last date of attendance, if beyond their original projected graduation date.

Permit to Leave

A student may not leave school during scheduled hours unless he or she has first filled out a 'Permit to Leave' slip and has had the permit signed by both an Instructor and, the school's director, or in the Absence of the director, the person then in charge.

Class Pass

Students may not leave a scheduled class without first obtaining permission from their instructor.

Uniforms and Appearance

A clean and neat appearance is very important. Everything you do to and with your client is about appearance and image. The institute has approved school official uniform. Men and women are required to be in uniform while on the school premises. All of the students are required to purchase a uniform and to keep it clean and pressed at all times.
