500 Hour New York State Master Barber License Requirements
In order to provide Barber Services in New York State (NYS) an individual must obtain a Master Barber’s License.
Obtaining a Master Barber’s License will allow a practitioner to perform the following services:
- Hair Cutting,
- Hair Styling,
- Face Massaging and Sculpts,
- Applying skin and hair conditioners,
- Shaving the face, and
- Dyeing the Hair.
Performing any of the services mentioned above or any other barbering services without a Barber’s License can result in multiple large fines issued by the state.
To obtain a Barber’s License in NYS you must first do one of the following:
After you have completed one of previously mentioned requirements you need to pass the NYS Practical Barbering Examination (conducted by New York State).

Once you have mastered the above mentioned material you will be ready to pass your ‘Practical Examination’.
After you complete and pass your NYS Practical Barbering Examination you will be granted your Barber’s License! This means you can work as a barber at a a salon, open your own business or rent a chair from a salon. Note, you cannot rent out a chair from a salon to other practitioners unless you have a license!
American Barber Institute will teach you all you need to know about the barbering profession in order to be successful and you will get plenty of hands on practice in giving haircuts. You will be doing real haircuts to real people as a a result you will have enough experience to do your job and pass a a practical barber exam. When you sign up for barber classes at our Manhattan facility you will cover both required courses and we will also do all paperwork required to schedule your practical exam. All you need to do is come in and learn the trade.
